The road runs between mountains and canyons. Is Espinazo del Diablo worth it?Īlong the road you can contemplate the marvelous spectacle offered by Sierra Madre Occidental. Its steep gradients and narrow sections have earned it the adjective of “bleak”. The road has had a bad reputation for many reasons: it’s accident-prone and hundreds of people have died on it, these mountains have historically been remote and inaccessible enough that they are used for growing marijuana and poppies, and therefore, there has been a lot of crime in these mountains related to drug trafficking. Local legend says that when the Archangel Michael threw the devil from heaven and he landed here on earth, his backbone formed the rugged ridgeline of the Sierra Madres. One says that the impressive ravines deployed on both sides of the road allow to see the devil. There are some versions of the name given to the area. At afternoon is usually covered in a thick fog that traps less cautious drivers, turning every curve and narrow way into an odyssey. It suffers from recurrent fogs and roaming wild animals which cause frequent and fatal accidents. The road runs across dozens of deep ravines, bends with bumpy asphalt and rocks bordering at 2.000 higher. It is advisable to start with a full tank of gas. If we add that is one of the routes with more assaults, robberies and even murders, it becomes one of the most dangerous roads. The construction of this road was a hard job in some sections: one side has big banks and the other cliffs. The road passes through mountains and deep ravines. During the winter months there is the added danger of ice. The road ascends and descends across spectacular landscapes, sharp bends and bottomless cliffs. So tight that a truck needs all the road to make it around. Is Espinazo del Diablo dangerous?ĭespite of many cautionary tales about crossing the Devil's Backbone, El Espinazo del Diablo, is exceptionally well maintained and there are many cautionary signs marking most of the hazards. This section of the highway is narrow with lots of curves (around 2.000). It covers a stretch of highway about 10 km, where you can see the wonderful spectacle of the Sierra Madre Occidental topping out at 2.744m (9,002ft) above the sea level. Set high on the western slope of the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Espinazo del Diablo (Devil's Backbone) is a natural viewpoint at 2.440m (8,005ft) above the sea level, flanked by two deep ravines, located at kilometer 168 of the paved Mexican Federal Highway 40. Just keep the kiddies close. Can you drive through Espinazo del Diablo? The Devil's Backbone is a great example of a ghost film, and why not, a great choice for gateway horror. The Devil's Backbone may have been near the beginning of his career, but it's been clear from the start that his films stand out. Violence in del Toro's universe is very, very intense. Ghosts look the same as they look in other films from the Mexican director, such as Crimson Peak, and physical harm follows a pattern in his cinema. Even if The Devil's Backbone has traits of a war movie, it's impossible to discard the sensitivity of a director that dared to portray extreme fiction during a very real and horrific section of history.įor those more familiar with the director's career, The Devil's Backbone represents a device through which everything is connected in his universe (and repeats itself most explicitly in Pan's Labyrinth). Del Toro's is a director opening windows to worlds we cannot even begin to imagine. We need movies like these, even if we don't know it. It is ultimately a ghost story taking place during a very horrific reality.Īlmost two decades after its release, The Devil's Backbone is still a relevant take on the nature of fantasy during reality. Innocence during this chaotic event is essential, and the director impressively handles the balance of genres. They are and remain innocent when a horrible event such as war is happening around them. A wonderful introduction with a narrated message forebodes this consideration and also serves as a perfect closing device for The Devil's Backbone.ĭel Toro's handling of the mundane (and its consequential drama) gives us the chance to reside in his claustrophobic version of the "war effect." Trauma in The Devil's Backbone is not revealed as a determining factor in child characters. In The Devil's Backbone, this element is greatly reflected in a character whose malice is so powerful and malign that evil lies in an improbable dimension. Del Toro's active voice in exploring the dark side of the human psyche allows him to construct a perfect case for villains with ulterior motives, but which ultimately reveal their intentions. The director's consideration of horror has never been tampered with.

The answers are less interesting than the questions themselves. Who the hell are these people? Where is Planet 10? What’s an oscillating overthruster? Why is there a watermelon there? I’ll tell you later. Watching this singular film felt like picking up the 103rd issue of a monthly magazine, or diving into Episode V of Star Wars. We were blessed with the greatest comic book movie, as well as the greatest comic book universe never based on an actual comic book: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension. The appeal of connected characters eluded mainstream entertainment, and it would take decades of fan pleading before Freddy went against Jason and Predators scrapped with Aliens. Walt Disney’s main player in the superhero racket was the abysmal Condorman, although the desperate found ways to enjoy its particular delights.Ĭomic book geeks had to look elsewhere if they wanted to roam fully-formed realms of cinematic adventure. Don’t push it.įorty years earlier, on the Marvel front (or Timely, the brand that preceded Marvel Comics), a nearly unrecognizable Captain America puttered about in a serial, while the first three movies based on their characters ( Howard the Duck, Red Sonja, and The Punisher) were still a few years away. Those that strained their imagination to their breaking points could conceive that the Earth that Kal-El fled to might also be the same residence of Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing. The closest thing we had to an MCU or any comic book cinematic universe was the tangential connection between Supergirl and the first three Superman films. Or is her true target Buckaroo Banzai? As the apocalyptic threats continue to mount, only Buckaroo and his Hong Kong Cavaliers stand in the way of global destruction-or in the words of one of the movie’s iconic lines: “Laugh-a while you can, monkey boy!”īuckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League is a 544-page hardcover prose novel and will retail for $29.99. It will be available everywhere books are sold August 10, 2021. Still mourning the losses of his beloved Penny Priddy and his surrogate father Professor Hikita, Buckaroo Banzai must also contend with the constant threat of attack from his immortal nemesis Hanoi Xan, ruthless leader of the World Crime League. To make matters worse, Planet 10 warrior queen John Emdall has sent her Lectroid legions against Earth with a brutal ultimatum. Relating the further adventures of doctor/adventurer/rock star Banzai, the book picks up where the movie left off: Well, we say it’s written by Rauch, but the credits say it’s “as told by” the Reno Kid. But according to Rauch, the story of Buckaroo Banzai was always supposed to be continued in a series of prose novels.Īnd now, finally, all these years later, there is an official official sequel: Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League, et al: A Compendium of Evils is a 544-page novel written by Rauch coming in August from Dark Horse. The closest it came was a series of comics from tiny publisher Moonstone, also written by creator E.M. In the 37 years since its release, there has been plenty of sporadic talk about a sequel, but no movie or TV show - despite Hollywood’s obsession with repurposing every scrap of IP, Buckaroo Banzai remains just too weird and off-kilter to risk millions of dollars on. However, there’s an extra step that you can find in Fortnite when you’re looking at the Cipher quests. The Fortnite Status Twitter account posted a tweet about when the downtime for patch 23.50 will begin, but it also included a cipher at the beginning of the tweet: “3 18 1 3 11 20 8 5 3 15 4 5.” If you substitute the numbers in the sequence with their respective letter in the alphabet, you’ll get “ Crack the code,” which means that players will have to do that for the names of the quests themselves. That said, we've recently seen figures from Statcounter (an analytics firm) showing that Windows 7 users are now making the leap to Windows 10 in much bigger numbers (with Windows 7's userbase almost halving, going by the stats for February 2023).In the Fortnite 23.50 patch update, a new cipher quest line was added that gives you a bunch of quests that will reward you with experience, a spray, a loading screen, an emoticon, and a wrap when completed. (Or maybe Windows 11, although older PCs likely won't be compatible with Microsoft's newest operating system).īelieve it or not, there are still quite a number of people using Windows 7, which is well past its sell-by-date (three years over, in fact). For that reason, it's a sensible idea to upgrade to Windows 10 anyway. Windows 7 and 8 will be officially unsupported in Fortnite. Never mind Fortnite support, the obvious problem with still using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 is that they aren't supported by Microsoft any longer, with the latter OS having run out of road for support in January 2023.Īnybody still using these old versions of Windows will no longer get security patches, and could therefore be vulnerable to exploits when online. Indeed, within an eight-month span in 1961, it became the first aircraft to exceed Mach 4, -5, and -6, and it later went on to become the first-and, so far, only-airplane to fly in near space as it soared to a peak altitude of more than 67 miles (354,200 feet). The X-15 explored hypersonic and exoatmospheric flight. These are typically flown by the Air Force in conjunction with NASA and conducted in a very methodical fashion to answer largely theoretical questions concerning innovative aircraft design principles. Each is instrumented to acquire data about the aircraft, its systems and even the surrounding environment during research flights. Research aircraft are the tools for exploration and discovery. With the supersonic X-1, flight testing assumed a distinctive process using highly experimental research programs - such as with the X-3, X-4, X-5, and through dozens of subsequent X-series aircraft. By early 1945 the world's first experimental airplanes were under development: the rocket-powered XS-1 (later designated X-1), built under Army sponsorship by Bell Aircraft, and the turbojet-powered D-558-1 constructed by Douglas Aircraft under Navy patronage. That became clear by the mid-1940s as engineers began to probe the technological challenges of piloted, supersonic flight. Wind tunnels, simulators and computers can only model what is known. “This is really the art of the possible.X-Planes Eperimental Aircraft - Military Aircraft FAS | “What we’re trying to do on this program is open up the toolbox that airplane designers have, so future systems have new tools and new approaches they can take and consider,” Walan continued. “I don’t have to have a system out there that needs this.” “Because we’re DARPA, we can kind of push the envelope a little bit,” Walan said. If the concept does work, Walan said, it could be a “disruptive” technology - and even upend how future aircraft are designed. Walan said in 2021 this is an experimental project intended to show whether this kind of innovative technology can work, not to improve something already in operation. It will be many years - if ever - before this kind of technology lands in an Air Force plane or other military aircraft. Aurora hopes to conduct flight tests in 2025. The company said it would build this X-plane, which would have a wingspan of 30 feet, at its facilities in Virginia, West Virginia and Mississippi, and it would fly at up to Mach 0.7. “The CRANE X-plane is designed specifically to explore the effectiveness of AFC technologies at mission relevant scale and Mach numbers.” “Given all that we have learned about AFC and its application to tactical aircraft in prior phases of CRANE, the next step is to prove out these learnings in flight,” Graham Drozeski, Aurora’s vice president of government programs, said in a company statement. This test aircraft would have modular wing configurations that would allow DARPA or other organizations to easily swap in advanced technologies in the future. This will end with a critical design review of an “X-plane” demonstrator, that will be able to fly without traditional moving flight controls on its wings or tail.ĭARPA’s award also has the option to move Aurora into Phase 3 of the program, in which it would build a full-scale, 7,000-pound uncrewed aircraft that relies on active flow control for DARPA to test fly. Walan said in 2021 that it could also lead to lower costs and increased aircraft agility.ĭARPA launched the CRANE program in 2019, and organizations such as Aurora, Lockheed Martin and the Georgia Tech Research Corporation took part in its earlier stages.Īurora has now completed the project’s Phase 1, a preliminary design phase that yielded what DARPA described as “an innovative testbed aircraft” that successfully used active flow control in a wind tunnel test.Īurora will now move into Phase 2 under the $42 million contract, where it will create a detailed engineering design for its plane and develop flight software and controls. In its Tuesday statement, DARPA said this technology could improve how aircraft fly in several ways, including by eliminating moving surfaces to control the plane, reducing drag, thicker wings for structural efficiency and increased fuel capacity, and simplified systems to improve an aircraft’s lift. When installing a new software version, the previous version is automatically overwritten by the new version.
It's of note that the Obama administration has already adopted a more relaxed policy toward medical marijuana, making prosecution of medical marijuana users and dispensers no longer a federal priority. I find this quite reasonable, because although marijuana has demonstrated some clear health benefits, harsh drug laws have severely limited the amount of quality clinical research on it, and our knowledge in this area is just not up to par with what it needs to be for a routine medical treatment. This is still a relatively conservative position, as it doesn't directly advocate the medical use of marijuana directly, but rather more research on the subject. Edward Langston, an AMA board member, noting that the limited number of studies was "insufficient to satisfy the current standards for a prescription drug product." "Despite more than 30 years of clinical research, only a small number of randomized, controlled trials have been conducted on smoked cannabis," said Dr. In changing its policy, the group said its goal was to clear the way to conduct clinical research, develop cannabis-based medicines and devise alternative ways to deliver the drug. The nation's largest physicians organization, with about 250,000 member doctors, the AMA has maintained since 1997 that marijuana should remain a Schedule I controlled substance, the most restrictive category, which also includes heroin and LSD. on Tuesday urged the federal government to reconsider its classification of marijuana as a dangerous drug with no accepted medical use, a significant shift that puts the prestigious group behind calls for more research. Yesterday, the influential AMA (American Medical Association) announced that it would cease its opposition to the concept of medical marijuana and instead advocate for a change in federal classification of the drug.
